Here’s a fun little conversation I had with Mr E on May 1st about the elven tradition of using an egg as a divination tool. I hope you enjoy it!–

NL: So, egg divination…

MR E: It’s a little thing we do, you know and it can be done on May Day or any day you want to know what the future holds. The egg represents new birth and whatever is coming into the future is inside that egg because it is being born, you see? So that’s why it is called egg divination…

NL: I see, that’s pretty interesting…can you tell us how you do it?

MR E: Well, first you get yourself a pot of water and you boil it.  Once you have a good, rolling boil, you take an egg, crack it, and you drop it into the water.

NL: Can you show us how to do this?

MR E: Sure, get me an egg and boil me up some water…

(We used a medium sized pan and filled it 2/3 full with water. After the water was boiling, he took an egg, cracked it against the rim of the pan, said “What will our future be?”  Right after that, he dropped the egg–just the yolk and white, not the shell–into the water)

NL: Oh, so you’re not being careful with the egg then…

MR E: Oh, no, no, no, you don’t want to be careful, because if you’re careful, it’s going to be nice and neat and you don’t want that. Just crack it, drop it in there and watch what forms.

NL: And then, do you turn off the heat so you can actually see what’s there?

MR E: Yes

NL: All right, so now you look at it and…

MR E: You look, and you see what’s there.

NL: So…what do you see in there?

MR E: Well, you see the little things bubbling up and  you will see your egg forming into different shapes. Then, you will look for things that you recognize and have meaning. For example, if you see a bird, that could mean flight or travel…

NL: I see, it’s kind of like reading tea leaves.

MR E: Yes, it’s like tea leaves only with an egg, pretty much only you get to eat the egg afterward!

NL: No wonder you like this so much…

MR E: Oh! Look at that! Do you see that? There are two people together – they’re getting married!

NL: Yes, I see that…

MR E: There’s a marriage in the future.

NL: Your future?

MR E: No…not mine!

NL: (Laughing) Are you sure? Hey, you’re the one that cracked the egg – it’s got to be your future!

MR E: No, no, no, not mine. .. OK, there’s a man and wife so let’s see what else there is…

NL: Oh wow, look…there’s a horse’s head, see it? (If you look carefully, you can see it in the photo below.)

MR E: Oh yes, I see it! (That has significance to someone who was present and he spoke about it’s meaning to them.)

MR E: hmmm, I want to move the pan around so I can see it better…

(He turns the pan around in a circular motion to change the formations a little bit)   There’s a dragon! See it?

(He continued to point out things he saw and their significance to those who were present for quite a while.)

NL: So, what period of time does this cover in general?
Six months? A year?

MR E: Six months to a year…let’s see, what else do I see in here…I love egg divination, don’t you?

NL: Yes, I never thought we would be able to see so many things that we would recognize in there, it’s fascinating. Hey! I see a little gnome head there..

MR E: Yes, I see, in the corner here – (laughing) that’s probably me, I look just like that, you know!

(For the record, he doesn’t look anything like a gnome!)

I could have so much fun with the ” M” word in here I'm having such a hard time being good.  I was wondering if you throw a few divinitory type herbs in there if it would make it more detailed.

This sounds really interesting! I'll definitely be trying it out tonight. But do the Fae have different meanings to the signs (animals and such) you see in the egg? If they do, where can we find a list of symbols and meanings? Or can we use the standard list of meanings that are in divination books?

Hi charmedp4,

You can use regular chicken eggs, that's what Mr E used.  No, you don't boil any egg first,  you bring the water to a strong boil and then you crack the egg open and drop the raw egg right into the boiling water (no shell). Let the water bubble for a few seconds before you remove it from the heat and it should be ready to take a look.

Hi azure,

I think the standard divination books would work just fine. Those books can be useful but when I can, I go with what a symbol means to me personally, no matter what a book says.  Most of the things we saw were quite literal and didn't need much interpretation but there were other things that would fall into the category you are talking about.  Good luck, let us know how it goes!

LOL – yes the “M” word seems to terrify him but I think he's in denial!  :)

The herbs are very interesting idea – it seems to me that it would amplify things so I  would give it a try and see how it works.  If you do that, please let us know your results, I'm very interested in the outcome!

I could second guess him and say he was intending to set you up  ( something like that is how I ended up north of the 52nd)  I wouldn't blame him too much for the dread of the “M” beast they do live rather longer than we do it's a big change over a very long period of time.

The future is not something I really want to know ahead of time. I need to take it one day at time right now. It's a crazy enough ride as it is.

I just tried it. i heated up the water but not up to a 'boiling point' but still it was HOOOOOOT and then I cracked the egg. Weird webs started spreading and it looked like two people standing and holding on to eachother? I could tell which one was the girl because the blog (haha) had long hair that floated to the surface, ya know like when a girl jumps into the water and her hair just spreads out fluidly. Then the two seemed to just swirl around /dance? together and the joined into a clump and then went back into the water. the water wasn't clear it was clouded. and then i think the woman clump came up to the surface and it changed! it was freaky! the little whites seem to come alive! like some had little faces haha. the woman clump changed and sprouted a tail? and then wings? I dunno and then the male clump still connected to the woman clump joined together and made a blob that looked like a pregnant mermaid? haha that was the main one. so i dumped the water and the egg shape on the bottom was a perfect oval and at first i thought it looked like the full moon with a woman wrapping around it and then i looked again and it looked like a pregnant person? It better not be talking about me! and then these weird whispy things w/ long arms and they pretty much looked like nymphs to me idk kept  surrounding ” the couple” and then there was this tall skinny figure that looked like it was fishing. does any of that make sense?

Well obviously much of it was about water and pregnancy. Perhaps someone in your life will be pregnant soon. The moon rules water so it is interesting that appeared. Fertility is also what an egg symbolizes too.

I just did this! I was making myself lunch and decided it would be a good time to try this out. I'm still not sure how I should interpret all that I got; and I got a lot! I first cracked the egg in and couldn't make out anything. Then I saw a goat and I interpreted it as pertaining to me because my sun sign is Capricorn. Below that what showed up was what looked like a gryphon to me and a rose directly in front of it, almost as if it were holding the rose. Things kept moving around and I saw what looked like a dragon in flight and below it, where the thicker white egg pieces were underneath the water, what looked like a skeleton formed and quickly dissipated. As the foam started moving around again I thought I saw a bunch of dragons. I didn't see much else after this so ran to get my notebook.

When I came back some things had changed. I saw what looked like a baby bird hatching out of a shell and the large dragon–which had previously had the skeleton underneath it–looked as if it were sitting and looking down. The neck was bent and below it was what looked like a weird… serpent creature? It was a serpent like body, a rounded head, and bony wings like a bat's.

Then at the very end when everything stopped moving for good there was a large rose. A full stem and top and even a leaf.

Not sure what all of this means but it was very interesting to try out! Thanks Mr. E and Natalie for sharing!

Btw, the egg was very yummy afterward! :)

I tried it this morning and first thing i saw was a little dog which then transformed into the letter H next to it ( on the left ) was a tiny full circle and i thought about the full moon maybe the dog was a wolf after all ? then there was a woman with a beautiful long dress almost like she had layers of translucent fabric she looked like a priestess and all of them the dog and woman were inside a very big circle, i'm really intrigued , anyone have an idea about what it meant?

Overall very fun experience thanks Mr E and Natalie ! , and like Cocoa said the egg was definitely yummy afterwards !

lol! You won't believe this! All of that stuff is in my story! Well the wolves aren't in my story quite yet and the bats which are in my story aren't serpent like. Do you think that those are connected to my story. Maybe it's just a coincidence. It probably is.

Well it would certainly make it more tasty when you go to eat it afterwards…. :)
