Those ideas are good! I like the birdbath one too :-) She could chip away part of the middle out with a hammer and chisel– or even a large screwdriver and then put a bowl in the indented part in the middle- fill with water as a bird bath and then plant around the tree stump.
It's sad when a person cuts down a perfectly healthy tree– One day they will learn (probably after thier death for many people) how much suffering we humans have inflicted on plants and trees because we couldnt be flexible enough to co-exist with them around us, or we put the trees in catagories and labled some as "junk trees" not fit near human homes, when all they needed was just some love and pruning and appreciation for what these trees have to offer the Earth.
Sumac trees are an example in our area. Sumac is not a fancy hardwood tree, so it is considered a noxious weed tree- and always cut down. However, Sumac is a wonderful beautiful tree that resembles a miniature palm tree, is drought and disease resistant, and it's beautiful wine red velvety fruit is a vital food for birds during the harsh Winter months when all of the berries are gone and snow is covering the ground making it hard for birds to forage for food.
Same with milkweed . We have neighbors down the road that removed all of the milkweed from the side of their yard while they allowed the other weeds to grow there. Milkweed is the sole plant that monarch butterfly caterpillars rely on to feed off of. There is an enzyme in the milkweed plant that enters the caterpillars body and makes them taste horrible to birds. It also provides the perfect balance of nutrition for the growing Monarch caterpillar and was practically designed just for Monarchs in mind. People don't understand this and will tear it from thier properties or tractor right over them — considering them nothing but "weeds"
All things have a purpose. Nothing that was created was ever created in vane but much of mankind has yet to wake up to this truth.
On a road nearby a certain property had some beautiful trees growing near their home, but they chopped the trees down and are selling the wood for firewood. They made the area into a muddy Quad Track for thier kids- instead of the beautiful piece of land it was with the nice trees growing on it. They like the lot better all ripped up with mudpuddles and piles of rocks thrown in the middle, tree stumps and litter and beer cans strewn all over while they race thier quads around thier newly made "track". They have a makeshift sign erected from the pile of rocks in the middle of the lot, "Firewood for sale"
Across the street they have some of the tree stumps thrown in a big pile and mixed with mud and debris. I guess that must be part of what they are selling for firewood. I snuck my car over there today and spirited away one large tree trunk to use as a sitting stool for the butterfly garden I started on the side of our yard.
I feel so sad for this tree, but one part of this tree will not turn into mere firewood– but will hold a special place of honor in the butterfly garden!
