So… I have a question for everyone. What do you think that faeries… real faeries, are actually like? Like, when you think about faeries, what do you think about? Do you think about small, tiny, humaniod-looking creatures on gossamer wings that drink honey like humming birds, or tall, lithe men with blonde hair and pointy ears? What do you think about when you think about what a real faerie is?

I also have another question. Are you afraid of them? Do you think that they're scary? Just curious, there's not a lot of discussion going on lately, so I figured that I'd start one.

Hmmm, this is a tricky question to answer for me. My view of the fae, even in my childhood, has never been typical. I learned to read at the age of three, and my mother bought me a book of Grimm's Faerytales. They weren't the watered down versions however; they were the original. You know, the stories where the real little mermaid died and it hurt her feet like knives as she walked on land, and some real weird stories that aren't really well-known (my favorite being some story about this girl who goes to live with some cats and gets dipped in gold… it's a really weird story, but really interesting xD)

The first evil faery I ever read about was the faery in the original Sleeping Beauty story. As a result, I spent a small portion of my childhood (between maybe the ages of 3 and 7) positively terrified of the wicked creatures the stories called faeries. I heard from my religious grandmother that salt protects you from evil, so I always kept some on hand. Yeah, I was a huge baby back then.

In grade 2, when we started "playing" faeries, I grew out of it, and started enjoying the idea of faeries more. But, I'd never thought of them as Tinkerbelle-esque, or pixie-ish, more like tall humans with wings and refined features.

In grade 4, I read the Spiderwick series, which featured evil faeries and faeries which, while they were not evil, were certainely not good. Faeries with depth. While I'd always had a healthy respect for them, the old childhood fears began to reemerge, though certainely not to the old-time extent. I was careful about what I was attracting (hooray, pixies are boring!) and made sure that I was protecting myself from negatives influences at all times.

From that point forward, I always held the view that faeries came in many forms. Nothing, and I mean nothing, bothers me more than someone who willl argue for hours with me that faeries only look and act like Tinkerbell xD To me, faeries are so varied. I mean, sure you have your pixies, and sprites and stuff, but there's so much more to it than beautiful little gauzy-winged women. I've always used the word "faery" as a broad umbrella under which various mythical creatures fall as well though, which can get confusing :P

My opinion on faeries today? Today, I hold a healthy respect, not fear. I do not like fearing things…. it seems that many of those things you fear can sense it. I do not delude myself…. I can protect myself, but to a limited extent. I would not stand a chance against a powerful faery. I am fully human. However, I know that if I give them no reason to attack me, there is less of a chance of any sort of attack happening. Which is why I do not channel, or try to communicate with any other faeries other than pixies. I take these measures, knowing the risk. That is how I see these things.

Well, I know there is different types of fae, but I basicallly think of them as humanoids, sometimes with wings, or pointy ears, when they are in physical form. When they aren't they are basically orbs, or maybe auras.

I am somewhat afraid of them, not for what they are though. If I were alone, or maybe if it were night time, I would probably freak out a bit, maybe because I have never seen any before, and because I am not sure of it's intentions.

Hello Ashy, it's a very interesting discussion that you have put forth. I would say that I view the fae as very different from each other. I do picture some of them as the "tinks" of the Disney pictures but there are so many more. They can be tiny with or without wings or over 7 ft. tall with pointy ears and defined features. Some are beautiful and some, by society standards, are gnarled and ugly. So as I was saying I have no set picture of the fae and think of the word as an umbrella term that has so many different species with so many different looks.

I'm not scared of them but do try to be respectful of their power and their space. I know they can be very powerful but if ever I feel the situation is scary or that I'm not able to handle it I call on my Goddess to protect me. I believe in the power of belief so if you believe that you can be harmed then you are opening yourself for that negativity. So as long as I stay strong in my belief and stay positive I feel safe and open. I haven't had an encounter however I try to be open and do what I can to help the environment to encourage one. :)

Thanks for the discussion it will be interesting to see the different views of everyone.

I think of them as different from each other as well. Faerie is a very broad term for me. I imagine pixies as no more than 6 inch tall, insect like beings with humanoid features. I imagine Tuatha De Danann as very tall, warrior like people. Leannán Sidhe as beautiful women with a vampire like charm. Elves as tall, slender, graceful people with slightly pointed ears and a faint silvery glow to their skin… Also when I think "faery" I think of creatures that aren't humanoid at all, like poohkas for example. The list is practically endless.

I was not raised up knowing about them. When people mention fairies, the first thing I thought of would be the little people. But I am aware fae isn't just the little people. And if I do think of the bigger one, it would be a tall blondie elf, that was how stories has it. When I think about a real faerie I get the image of a dangerous being who can harm me without using physical object and one that is very tricky, with me never knowing what they are up to. Sometimes I am afraid of them, because I feel they can read me, every thoughts, every actions. I feel they can see me and be disgust. I think they are very scary because if I do offence one, I don't know what to do. But then I am still very interest in them and hope if I could Astral Project I would want to visit the otherworld which is quite scary, but I still want to go.

I think there are so many kind's of Fae Beings that we really can't say there is just one kind.    There have been encounters of the "Tinkerbelle' type as well as other kinds that look like a cross between insectoid and humanoid– with wings who are definitelly not insects –definitely intelligent Beings. Many have seen gnomes too and their are many kinds of Elven Beings beside–       There are some who are threatening and hate humans, some who just don't bother with us one way or the other, and some who want to connect with us to get us to wake up before we destroy this entire planet.

Even though faeries are not angels, there are even said to be many many differnt types of angels as well.   Just look at the animal and plant Kingdom and how much variety there is there-    Even we humans come in all differnt shapes and sizes and facial features.

Hera, I was just wondering why you wouldnt want to connect with the Pixies.. they are actualy very funloving Beings who have alot of compassion for animals- including housepets.     I believe the Faery Being I saw was a Pixie– or else a Brownie. Brian Froud painted them, and they are rather cute bold little Beings but very intelliigent and worthy of respect.

They do like to seperate themselves from the rest of the Faery , but they are delights to have around.   I had that one experience, and then have heard them speak to me after I had a reading done at a Holistic Fair once–    I was told that the Pixies were the ones my little pup was chasing from the mushrooms–which explained why she was charging after something invisible from a circle of mushrooms that popped up near the Faery's Garden.    It was cute to see her charging after them like a little bull.   When I got home from the fair, I was thinking about how bratty these Pixies were by teasing our pup like that- when I was actually interrupted by these Pixies speaking emphatically to me: "We have to do that because you humans never pay enough attention to her!!!" they said.    Wow, I will never forget that and I saw a side of these Beings that I hadnt known before. I misjudged them.  They really do care about animals probably  more than we humans do.    Since then I make sure to show love to Mindy- who is now a full grown chocolate Lab.!

The pixies love to tease but they're mischieviousness is all in fun.   Since then , I was told by the woman at the Holistic Fair that the Pixies wanted me to know that they were responsible for all the purple flowers I was excited about (I hadnt told anyone other than my mother that I couldnt get over all the pretty purple astors everywhere that Summer.)    Also, they advised me to please put out a seperate Faery's Treat dish for them in the faery garden –seperate from the general Faery offerings dish- because I guess they like a little more privacy from the other Faery Beings.    So I did that- but have to re-do that again this week and give them a better dish I can put things in where my dogs won't get at them…lol

ps.. forgot to also mention that the Pixies wanted the Faery woman at that Holistic fair to tell me that they noticed my room had alot of natural things in it like twigs, stones and such-which they thought was cool- but they thought I should jazz it up some by maybe adding crystals and painting some of the twigs with gold lame' paint.    I have crystals but will have to figure something out for them using a little gold paint , etc.    The Faery Holistic Fair woman rolled her eyes when she picked up on that message from them and told them that I would have to spend money and they shouldnt ask me to do that..  but they ignored her- (probably becuase they knew that I wouldnt mind anyway)

They already advized this Faery woman to make little hassocks or hammocks for them to sell at the Holistic Fairs.. She and I thought that was a riot!  …lol!

They help her when she makes Faery cottages too- they are quite creative Beings :-)

@ Lisa

Oh, you misunderstood me; my apologies for not being clearer. What I meant is that I only connect with pixies, because I find them the least dangerous xD If you remember the faerie I was talking about sometime ago (Thistle), she took on the appearance of a pixie. She actually wasn't one (it was all glamour… she was in hiding), but it really did help me to trust her; there's something about pixies I adore. But yeah, I love them… they're so mischievious and stuff :P

I think I remember Thistle- what type of Being was she?  You have to pardon me, as I havnt been online much this Summer..  I really love thistles, by the way- and have met another woman over a year ago who met a faery named Thistle as well-

Hehehe, sorry, I wasn't trying to sound harsh or anything xD I hate conveying stuff over the web :P

Actually, to be honest, I haven't the faintest idea what kind of Being Thistle was; you'd have to ask Coriander Shea for that… but she did masquerade as a pixie for the longest of times xD I PMed her awhile back as there were some safety concerns about Thistle… and the beings that were searching for her. As it turns out, Thistle's true name is Althea (it's ok to post that… it's all over the net), and she was a lost queen of some sort (I've been told that they're queens "of the Sidhe", but that doesn't tell me much… if you remember Mab, Althea is also one of the queens.) So, I don't think that the two Thistles are one and the same… as much as I love the idea :3 I'm sure it must be a common name though, and I do so love Thistle plants.

I wanted to ask because I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with other faeries besides pixies. As I understand it, Pixies are probably the most human-friendly type out there. I think that there are actually a few around my house, they like to catch things that hang off of me or cords that hang off of things, if there's something hanging off, they'll always catch it on something else, even if it's so small that there's no way it could have caught on that, it will. I've never seen any though.

Aislinn and I have 12, and they're all big faeries, nobles and gentry. We've never met any elves though. We have mostly Tuatha de Danann and Sidhe. Outside of our fae, I've had mostly rather scary experiences with fae, some of which make me wonder why they're all still around, but I'm sure that without them I'd be dead so many times over, it wouldn't even be funny. I love them all, especially the strange ones, they're the most fun. But, I always get so upset when I see how many people want "one of their own", having never had an experience with faeries before, but they've heard of so many people having experiences that they want "one of their own" as well.

Before the Faeries started interracting with me, I used to read a lot of faerie tales and new age paranormal fiction, wanting so badly this experience that these great heroines were having, being able to see faeries as though they're real, corporeal people and being swept up by these hot men in amazing adventures where good always triumphs over evil. You know, when I read those stories now, I think to myself "god, she must be so STRESSED OUT by all this stuff", because my own adventure is somewhat different and not at all like theirs.

Most often there are days when I'm scared or stressed or I just want everything to go back to normal, or I can't give the fae my time right now because I have a paper due in 2 hours and I need to write it, or I need to sleep, or I don't want to channel you because you're depressed and then your depression will rub off on me and I'll be depressed, or I can't give you what you want, Silverlance, I can't make Nevermore be nice to you because you're lonely. Sometimes channeling takes so much out of me that I don't want to get out of bed for days…

And I just look at all these people who go "I want a faerie of my own!" and go "why…? Why would you want to complicate your life like that?" Don't get me wrong. I love my faeries. I love mine. I don't ever want them to go away, or leave me, because I don't think I could deal very well with that. They're what keep me going, but to people who've never had an experience, teenagers and children that have never met a faerie and go by what they read in books or in romance novels, it's not like that. It's not the same and it's not always safe. But… I'm also nearing my 30's, I'm older, I'm not a child anymore…. physically.

Mentally sometimes I wonder about that, but physhically not a child. Sometimes I fear for all these little kids wanting an adventure, and not having a clue what doors they're gonna open up if it ever actually works. Y'a know…? Without my fae, I'm sure I'd be screwed over an awful lot.

Hey all =)
Whenever I think of the fae or catch a glimpse of them, they always look different and diverse. I never really see anyone looking similiar to one another. And they resemble, to me at least, the fae that Brian Froud depicts and also Pan's Labyrinth. They're very…organic is the only word I can think of to describe them. Although sometimes I see very tall and lithe fae, I'm not sure what kind they are. It's not very often though, just in passing. There are many tree spirits though, I think, where I live.
I don't think I'm afraid of them. I just have a healthy respect for them and know when to back away and when I've been given a pass, as it were. I don't know any fae personally but I do have many that reside on the property that my house is on. I feel like they've been there longer then my family has, especially because I've always known they were there, like something watching us, but nothing interacting personally.
It's strange because we do sort of communicate but not with words. Like, if I'm doing something they don't like, maybe pulling up the wrong plants or accidentally leaving garbage or something on the lawn, I'll get a sort of feeling like a mental nudge and I'll realize what's wrong and hopefully correct it. And if they're doing something I have issue with, which doesn't actually happen very often, I politely give them a mental nudge back and the problem generally stops. Whenever something bothers me though, like some of my things go missing or I feel a mischiveous presence, I'm always sure that's it's just a different bunch of fae or spirits passing through. That's because the ones that 'live with me' (though sometimes I feel more like I live with them, haha) I don't really get any 'feeling' from. I don't get any happiness or warmth but I don't get negativity either. Just neutrality. I like to think we have a healthy relationship where we just sort of live with each other and go about our own business while keeping an eye on each other. I don't go out of my way to get to know them and push them for names or details and they don't try to get to know me. It works for us though =)

Wow, sorry for the long post! I sort of rambled on there =P

I'm not afraid of faeries but I'm also not disrespectful to them either. And even if I did fear them, it would depend on which. Saying that, I cannot help but to think of "the little fairies with butterfly wings" or elves when somebody says fairy.

I also think its pretty….rude when some kid or something says "I want my own fairy!" They are people and you need to respect them to gain their trust. Humans arent pets so why should faeries be?

Yeah, I've always found that disrespectful. I'm always careful not to call the pixies that hang around me "my" pixies. It's different for *my* spirit guides, because they're mine and mine alone, but you can't own a faery any more than you can own a human being, I find.

Valor bashes his head into the wall every time he hears "I want my own faerie friend". I'm surprised that he doesn't have more of a headache than he already does with the amount of times I see him beating his head into the wall. He wonders why nobody listens to him when he talks.

Sometimes I wonder if Faeries ever get concussions or not, because as many times as Valor is like "facepalm", he should have one more often than he does. I wonder if it's just because he heals fast. I know that fae can be injured in battle, and be harmed in that way, and then healers are called to deal with the problem, but I don't know if that's only it.
