I read in abook recently (13 Treasures, everyone here should read it, it's amazing) and when two of the main characters discussed the seelie and unseelie it was said that the two courts had a falling out and decided to rule at different times of the year. The unseelie during fall and winter (when the earth 'dies' and the trees are bare, grass is dead, etc.) and the seelie during spring and summer (when the earth is 'reborn' and the trees have new growth, grass is green, etc.). It made sense but it didn't sound like it really went with what I've been learning here. So my question is: is it true?

If I were just a fairy small I'd take a leaf and sail away; I'd sit astride the stem and guide it straight to Fairyland, and stay. ~Ben Johnson If you don't believe in the unbelieveable then how can you be openminded enough to believe in anything? ~Me

For the most part… Yes. Currently, as far as I know (due to the sidhe that hang out in my house) the current ruler of the Winter Court is Unseelie. However, it doesn't exactly work that way. There aren't just the Seelie and Unseelie Courts; Summer and Winter have their own courts as well as the Night Court, Bright Court, Moon Court, Sun Court (they're not too nice at the moment) and then the Black and White Courts. I have no idea what the point is for the Black and White Courts, I just know that they exist.

But the Summer Court rules from Beltaine to Samhainne, and the Winter Court from Samhainne to Beltaine. Beltaine and Samhainne are the old Gaelic names for the Spring and Fall Equinoxes. Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice are huge Faerie/Pagan holidays.

So yes… but also no. There's more than the two courts, way more.

Colour Chart for Faeries that steal my keyboard:

Silverlance in blue.

Ambrosia in red.

Valor in purple.

V in light blue.

Rose in Pink.

So, if I'm writing in any of these colours, I'm most likely not Ashy, I'm one of them.

Unseelie vs Seelie, is the most common two courts that are addressed.

Unseelie:  Chaos. Revenge. Abide by rules of their own.

Seelie: Order. Justice. A strict code of honor.

The seasonal courts are just that, those who associate themselves with a particular season. There are those in seasonal courts who hold control and responsibility over those seasons as well.

The Black and White courts represent the scale of grey in which fae view mortality vs immortality. These courts are the judges of the Lord of the Dead. Black and White court are relatively far and few in between, and are not messed with regularly because they determine whether fae are reincarnated, can create a new avatar or whether or not the fae will be permanently disposed of.

@Ashy: Such as the situation with the CCK, Ashy. It was determined by the Black and White courts.
