It seems this post is cursed. I accidentally refreshed the page before posting, then the page refreshed itself. I couldn't add links to pics and my computer froze. D:
Before reading please go to this post to go through a Mayan calendar overview.
This is what I found on 2012:
The current long count
began in August 11, 3114 BC. There was no astronomical rarity or event in that
date. The only mention to what happened in
the end of the previous count is mentioned in the Dresde Codex: water falls from the Sun, the Moon and
a celestial reptile. More water is poured from a jug held by an old
goddess. Below her, a male deity holds arrows and a lance. It's
likely a metaphor to describe a real event.
Now, if we count 13 bactuns from Aug. 11, the final date is
December 21/22, 2012 (not exact since Mayans had no fractions in their Math system, so they had to add and subtract entire days to compensate, but we have no clear idea of how they did it). This date is only mentioned in
Monument 6 from Tortuguero, Tabasco. It probably says that a supernatural
being (could be the god Bolon Yokte' K'uh, associated to war and Xibalba, the underworld) will come to our world, but just when the text becomes
interesting, the stone is
damaged.
One common idea that appears in all
texts is the importance of purification and sacrifices to honour the
gods in the beginning of the new cycle. I think any further
interpretation is unnecessary. The real importance of the texts is the awesome opportunity that is a new beginning.
I hope this gives more room to debate. I really love to read your thoughts!
Glad to be back,
Daji
