I feel, if there is a teens board, there should be an elders board as well

Strange, I've been thinking the same thing. In the effort to keep these forums perfectly kid-safe, it's sort of become not adult-safe. Maybe there could be a board where discussions could be had on a more complicated level without needing to worry about keeping everything kiddie-vanilla. Is that even possible? Is there any general interest in that kind of thing here?

Yes, I agree, especially with that Athidal has said. I may not be in my 30s or 40s, but I am past the teen stage and our thought processes are very different. It would be nice to have a board where adults can discuss things as well.

Yes, I agree it would be nice as long as there are enough people who are interested and if I can figure out how to do it so that only adults can access it

I hope those of you who are interested will let us know here.

Thanks!

Hi,Everyone, If its ok,I agree, I am a Elder 63 in age but my heart and spirit are young,Age are just numbers. The younger generation knows alot of things and that is a good thing, but the Elders have seen and been through it all,it is good that both share there knowledge together, new things are always good,as well as old.Bill (little Eagle)

I think that there should be an elder board but I guess I'm not so into the idea that others may not be able to enter it. I know there are things that younger people shouldn't read yet, so if it is used that way I understand why youngsters would be blocked.  I understand that adults may want a place to talk about things maturely, but I feel like some mature people will be excluded… I'm only fourteen and I feel like I am mature, though I am definitely biased. I guess I just want to gather a large database of information about spirituality and the supernatural.     Sorry if I am sounding rude, I do think and elder section would be nice, though.

@ Bill – I don't think the purpose is to exclude people and I do agree wisdom is found in all ages.  I think some people may want to discuss things without worrying about the impact it may have on those who are not quite as mature.

@Sarah – I don't think you sounded rude and I completely understand where you are coming from.

@ Kalvin – It goes without saying that I think you are wise well beyond your years. :)

To all:  Please feel free to share your opinions on this, I am interested to hear from everyone.

I can see how many here in the forum would feel more comfortable with an adult board– so maybe it would be a good idea for these people.  That way everyone is happy.

I just want the younger folks here to know that this doesnt mean that they are all going to be left alone by themselves while all the adults move over to the adult board.  No-siree!

I love reading the younger member's posts and like Bill-  feel in tune with the younger crowd here.   I admire the  younger one's spirit :-)      I'll be one of the adults probably not posting all that much in the adult section–except to monitor it for misbehavior.,    I think I will probably end up gravitating to where the younger folks areWink

Nevertheless- for the adults here– I think it would be a good idea for a section where they can share things that may be confusing for the younger people.

Honestly my main concern is not so much with being able to discuss topics that are taboo to younger people, although I can certainly understand why some would want this ability. After all, it's no fun to (for example) merely mention the word 'drugs' and have a bunch of young folks metaphorically cover their mouths with their hands and start going "Ohhhhhhm, you said a BAD word, you evil bad person!" But I'm more with Cocoa on this – somewhere around the time that teenagers hit college age, a different and more complicated style of thinking tends to evolve. This isn't a hard and fast rule – on another forum that encountered this same age/thinking differential I've encountered fourteen year olds who were capable of very mature thought. But I think it would be nice if people who have hit this threshold, regardless of age, had a place to carry on conversations of nuance and complexity, and to consider topics in all their glorious shades of grey without being ambushed by frivolous or immature comments. But maybe this is just me. Honestly I was just never really sure whether there were enough people here that are interested in that kind of discussion to sustain a separate section for it. There are a few meaty topics that I'd be interested in discussing with folks, but as it feels like my previous attempts to start threads like that have mostly fallen flat…

If there's enough interest, I'd be content with a section in which it was appropriate to broach difficult topics, to ask people posting in it to stay (mostly) focused, and in which civil discussion is required (although really I think that last one already goes for the whole forum.) But maybe it would be best, if it is possible, to have an open subsection for older people, with just one part locked down as being 'for mature readers only' so that 'taboo' topics can be discussed by those who feel the need. A sort of 'college corner' if you will, for the one room schoolhouse that these forums currently are.

Just a thought.

Hi everyone again, thank you,I think we may be getting into an area of problems, younger children come to the site to learn and want to be part of discussions also, there are those who know more than we do,and what about the parents maybe they might want to see what sites there going to,but if there has to be a closed area that would be good, for the protection of everyone,as long as you let them know why so they won't feel left out. hope I'm not getting in to deep,If I am Let me know.Bill (little Eagle).

I agree that there should be a board for mature people and/or more complicated thinkers not just for adults because some children/teenagers are very mature and complicated thinkers (including meWink)…

I do agree especially with a part of what Athidal and Cocoa said–I'm going on eighteen and feel like I would be a bit out of place in the 'teen' forum and wouldn't mind another forum section, not necesarily because of topics considered to be taboo, but because I would like a place to participate in more mature discussions.

However, something Sarah said did get me thinking too. Perhaps the forum could be closed to younger users if you'd want, but if they're mature enough for some of the discussion, could be granted approval? I dunno, that may cause more drama and problems than it would solve, too.

I didn't mean for it to sound insuting, Fire Fae, and I'm sorry if you felt that it was. What I was trying to say (and I forget who actually started the topic in the 'for teens' forum, you're right, maybe that wasn't quite the best place to do it) – what I was trying to say is that there are some things that are complicated in ways that can make them hard to talk about in a way that the younger readers on these forums would feel comfortable with. It isn't a comment on anyone's intelligence.

Think of it this way: in grade school classrooms they teach about atoms and molecules being like little nucleuses of protons and neutrons with electrons orbiting them like planets, because you sort of have to understand them that way first in order to understand the teachers in the higher grades when they tell you that really, the idea of an electron orbiting a nucleus like a little planet around a sun isn't true. It's just easier to understand than electron shells and valences. And then, when you move on to college, you might get a teacher who starts talking about quantum physics, and up and down quarks, and explains why even electron shells and valences aren't quite the right idea, either, and how maybe it's all down to superstrings (but we aren't sure yet). So, maybe you can see why people who want to talk about superstrings might have trouble discussing them with grade schoolers. ^_^

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just would really like to be able to talk about superstrings. If you see what I mean.

Well I will tell you, and believe me I am nothing like my peers. I like quantum physics. Whilst others watch mtv I watch discovery network channels. I honestly only have a serious conversation with my teachers and sometimes even they don't know what I am saying. My peers can't comprehend what I enjoy speaking about. So if you want to talk about super strings or a carbon based fiber 100s of times stronger than human muscles and is bullet proof all while being thinner then the human hair and somewhat transparent, be my guest.

SirZachary, if you are comfortable talking about things on those levels (and I don't just mean science stuff, that was just the example I was giving), then as far as I'm concerned you are more than welcome to join in.  :)

Really, some of the things I'd like to talk about concern things like how the whole Seelie vs. Unseelie division seems just a little bit too pat to me to be strictly true as currently presented…maybe something on the ethics of Seelie intervention (or non-intervention) and how humanity is likely to respond to either…how to reach out to people who are too jaded to believe in the currently popular (by this I mostly mean Disney and Santa Claus) version of faeries…possibly try to examine some of the older mythology about the fae and see how that measures up against what Mr. E is telling us…stuff like that. I also thought it would be interesting to play a game where we take the little details that Mr. E lets drop about his culture and world, and try to deduce other things about his world from those. That's the kind of thing I'd like to have a subforum for, really – a place where people would feel safe about coming and talking about things that make them *think*. And although technically those kinds of topics could be posted under “General Conversation” or something, chances are pretty good they'd quickly get buried under other topics. So, that's why I feel there ought to be a place set aside for those kinds of discussions. Of course, a lot of it also depends on whether anyone else is really *interested* in having those kinds of discussions.

The final call is, of course, up to Natalie and Susan. :)
