Hello,
im going to be making fairies out of OOAK polymer clay, but im not sure what to do. I don't want to make it look so much like tinkerbell, im gonna try and make it look real. Im using tibetane hair and glass eyes too.
Can anyone give me a description of what a real fae looks like, i really like the description Lisa Grey Eyes gave when Lisa had an encounter with the little fairy/brownie in her hair :)
any ideas??? :) Thank you xx

That sounds exciting, you should link us to a picture when you're done!
As for what a real faery looks like, there are MANY different types. "Fae" is a general term for all creatures of the Faery Realm. This includes elves, pixies, brownies, sylphs, etc.
If you want an idea of what type of Fae being you would like to make, here's a helpful link: http://www.worldoffroud.com/ww…../index.cfm

okey dokey I'll help you out lol. Anyways, fairies when they are in our world they could look funny or pretty. I assume you want the fairy to look pretty. Female fairies have gorgeous hair and they can be modern, short, or long but they have flowers growing out of their heads like its amazing. their wings (altough they dont need them) mimic animals so it could look like a bats, butterflys and you get the point. Their outfits are super duper cute and they blend in well with their surrondings. like a fairy that cares for a rose would typically wear red (but not plain red it has lots of gorgeous details) And fairy gowns are extremely detailed like full on sparkles with flowers and crazy stuff. fairies can be barefooted and a lot of them do wear shoes and its up to you how you want to design them. Aaand the dress is made out of natural stuff like flower petals, twigs, leaves, fire(for fire fairies)…. Plus, a fairies skin colour could be like a humans skin colour tan, fair, dark but a lot of fairies skin are purple pink red and stuff. for face, they wear crazy makeup like bright colours, flower or spider web patterns on their face, and jewels. their eyes are different colours like pink, green, or even rainbow. they also have tattoos on their bodie (but its not painful applying it). they also have pointy ears. i only described for earth fairies. water, air, and fire fairies are different
they have extremely detailed wands too

Ok I'm sorry but I that is a little too disney. For 1 faeries can not fully manifest on this side of the veil so they usually come as lights or their energy, but faeries mostly change there appearence as in they change FORM. They wear mostly cotton clothing and it's mostly medieval design but they will sometimes wear something more modern like jeans (quoted in the common types of fairy page) I don't think the fae use wands because they are already skilled at directing energy without them which you will learn in other posts. It's not possible to make clothing out of fire, even for the fae. Fire is dangerous even over there. They wouldn't wear lots and lots of crazy make up because they are natural and prefer natural simple things not crazy over top. would you enjoy wearing loads of make up all the time? I don't want to sound mean. I just think you need to research more on here.
@Leigh I think you should ask the fae what to make and see if a picture or inspiration comes into your mind. Stellar is right the word fairy or fae is a main type for all magical beings in the magical realm. You should also go the the common types of fairies archive. They have descriptions of the most common fae on this side and they post pictures that most resemble the fae. Post a pic SOON!

@facecat i do know that some fairies do like to wear more natural makeup and it does sounds a bit disneyish (i just realized it lol) but i did not meant they wear loads of makeup. fairies are not all the same and fairies do use flower petals and such and it is possible fairies wear more medival clothing but im not saying all fairies do. Faes do use wands not all of them do just only certain faeries do and they obviously know how to use their own power and yes they are in energy forms but some of them can change form but it takes alot of work and skill. ONLY fire fairies wear fire. I have been on this website a lot of times and others as well and i did do reasearch. I know others say different things about the fae but this is pretty true although it may sound crazy because im not very good at explaining things well. sorry but i thought i should put that out there :)

I think that the magical part of it is getting a little too prominant. How could you wear FIRE? The fae may be able to use magic better then us but the still have bodies and they still get hurt. Fire is as dangerous in the fae realm as it is in the human. The fae have better control over it.

Though one would be suprised on the working of magic. I can not at all comment on whether this is true or not. I dont have these memories yet. So it is only fair for me not to say which or other till i know for sure. I do remember some that have warn more natural stuff as leaves and such. There are many many beings there. There are even many that humans dont even have knowledge of.

I agree with BlueTiger- noone can really say what a faery does or doesnt wear. Some have actually seen the Faery that do actually look like Tinkerbell in a way- Even Brian Froud painted a few like them. There are so many kinds of Faery- we will never know unless it has been given to us to cross over into the other dimensions to actually see for ourselves. Some , I've been told , enjoy colors alot- and they do enjoy hair styles. My co-worker who had seen a faery as a child mentioned how the female faery she saw had her hair up in a Victorian Bouffant hairstyle while wearing a dress. Many have seen these Beings in various dresses, and the male ones in various styled pants and shirts.– some with suspenders too. I read a testimony of one who saw a Gnome wearing a vest with lots of interesting items this gnome had found sewn on the front of the vest.
The Faery that I saw 3 years ago threw me off guard, because I expected that all faeries – if they exist- must look like Cicely Mary Barkers Flower Faeries. I had never seen all of Brian Froud's paintings prior to my encounter. After my encounter, I scoured the bookstores , like Barnes&Noble, to see if I could find anything on valid Faerie Encounters. Mostly I found folklore books- which I don't really take all that seriously– but when I asked the clerk if there were any more, he brought me right to the Brian Froud collections. I checked out the Good Faerie/Bad Faery book and saw the male version of Pixies that he painted– who looked VERY much like the Being I encountered- only she was much more softer and cultured looking. They were in the "Bad Faery" section of the book, yet the Being I saw was not Bad– but actually very humble, calm, sweet – and empathy was glowing out of her eyes toward me. She was feeling my pain I was feeling over a family argument the night before.
I had never seen most of Brian Froud's artwork before this- so this is why I think Brian Froud is gifted with an open-ness to receive from these Beings that other artists don't have.– maybe they just love the way he paints them and so they reallly went out of thier way to get him to perceive them.

I know that we don't really have a certain Idea but I feel that what Mr.E described in the common types of fairies archive is true. It's not an educated guess or an this must be, NO I feel like FOR MYSELF they wouldn't wear fire make up or something like high heels. They are natural. I talked to Nat about it and her is what she said:
some fae do alter their appearances and they can use glamour to suit their purposes but if you are wondering if they go to the extreme shown on the site here: http://www.fairies-secrets.com…..akeup.html , I doubt it very much. I think they are more likely to enhance themselves with natural things since they prefer that look in general.
I have no agenda to go against iluvdance and I know I sound skeptic, but I can't ignore these feelings I have. I'm sorry if I was giving off the impression of meaness or hard hearted but I don't agree with that description. I do feel that the fae would wear nature for clothing but they love being natural, victiorin times had a lot of fae sense with it and a hair cut is also symbolic of a new start and make you feel that but fire dresses, make up, and high heels are too human.
Wow I just went off there. I got really heated up! I just feel that this is the truth. Nat feels that the site above is a promotional site and not like this site. You guys should check it out.

Glamour was something one used quite often. Even my self as Sidhe i used glamour. Not always though. I dont remember any highheals being warn or some one puting on makeup. As i dont see the need really. The site above i havnt checked it out though i sence that things in it isnt all compleatly right. Also though not all is false with the site as well. What Mr. E has discribed are many common types of fairies. There are many more than just those that he has spoken of. Though the list can take to much time for one to really list. As i couldnt spell many of them any ways. You didnt do anything wrong in my eyes Faecat. You was defending what you feel in your heart. I dont see no harm done.

Well, there's certainly nothing wrong with recommending a fairy site for us to look at. :)
In this case, I did check the site and here's my opinion: I noticed that most (if not all) of the information seems to be coming from "Ophelia Fey, Fairy" but I couldn't find where they explain who she is, if she is real, or how and why she is communicating. Perhaps the artist behind the site, Mary S. Schulte, is communicating with some pixies but I just don't see any real solid evidence of that. There isn't anything on the site that seems as if it is coming directly from faery and a lot of it seems to confuse elementals with fae (not uncommon). Anyway, my gut feeling is that this is a fictional site aimed at tweens and younger, used to support the artist's work.
