There's something about that river

I haven't had many chances to get on the forums lately, since I'll be flying off to the other side of the country on Friday and I've been busy getting things together before I leave…but so much has been happening! I've even had to start keeping a journal of everything so I could get it into some sort of form to share with you all…even if the entries might be a bit long since I like to recall every single detail. Anyway, this entry is about a week old…and the grammar and such may not be perfect and some things may be random and not make sense since this is directly copy-pasta'd from the original, and it's more a stream of thought about what happened than anything~ But enjoy!

There have been a few…occurrences? That can most likely be traced back to the Fae, or something similar if not them specifically. Two of these that immediately come to mind are the dream/projection(?) of the squirrel-child in the tree, and most recently the encounter on the opposite bank. It was only a few days ago…Thursday, perhaps? My family had gone to swim at the river, and I met them later on. I had only been there a short while when they left; Maye and George (my younger siblings) were getting tired. They let me stay behind and enjoy the peace. It was very nice. It was late afternoon so the sun wasn’t too strong, and the water was a comfortable temperature, almost warm but still refreshing. I sat in a shallow(-ish, the water was about knee-deep) sandy patch in the middle of the river, watching a rather large spider that seemed to cast out a length of invisible thread (a fishing line of some sort?) from the mossy end of a log that stuck up out of the water. A kingfisher that’s been living here for some time flew around the bend just upstream and it would cackle over the cicadas every so often. The sun hit the trees in a very lovely manner; I wasn’t so used to this view since I would normally sit on the next bend downstream. I sat in the current for a while, enjoying my surroundings.

But then I started to feel a bit adventurous–I could rarely resist an area of the woods that had yet to be explored. I stood and began walking through the shallows with splashy footsteps that seemed much louder now that my younger siblings weren’t there to drown them out. It all seemed so natural. I wandered over to where the old “island” used to sit in the middle of the bend, and it was now a shallow dappled area along the outside bank. There’s a sandy ridge for a bank, covered in grasses and ferns, and a large tree’s branches (not certain as to what kind) hung low over the ridge and swept down almost to the water. Well, I went over to this area and sat in the shade of this tree and had a very strong urge to climb up the ridge. I figured that I hadn’t been across the river in a while and that it would be interesting to see what was at the top. I had to get on my hands and knees in order to climb up the bank because the branches hung so low and the sand was soft and fine and made it even more difficult to climb, but I didn’t mind. I reached the top, and all there was beyond the ridge was an old, dry, grey creekbed that I’d forgotten was there.

But when I turned around to climb back down, it sounded like something jumped up and sprinted down into the water. Not slithered, not slid, not scampered. Something sprinted for its life through the grasses and landed with a big splash in the shallow water below. It nearly gave me a heart attack! It had been very close when it rushed off, almost close enough to touch–I first thought it was a huge snake of some kind. But as I said before, it wasn’t a slithering sound…and I would have seen anything rushing off, I was looking straight at where it was. But all I saw were the grasses move and a fairly small splash despite being so loud. It seemed to have been invisible; the water that it had escaped to was so shallow that I could clearly see little fish, much less anything else swimming off that could have made that much noise.

But it doesn’t end there, oh no. Immediately after that, several cardinals landed in the tree right above where I sat on the bank, and they seemed just as puzzled as I did. Why else would so many of them (there were about seven or eight) come so close when they would normally be very wild, and why else would they be peering into the water? I tried not to think much of it at the time and proceeded to climb down. But then I felt my foot buckle in the soft sand and mud and I lost my balance and slid down the bank (on my rump!) and landed on my back in the water. It almost seemed like one of the birds (kingfisher? Woodpecker?) was laughing at me, although I was laughing too. I washed the mud off and noticed that on the top of the foot that had buckled, there was a red mark shaped almost like a tiny shoeprint. This intrigued me even more, so I climbed back up to investigate the spot that whatever-it-was rushed off from (not the wisest thing to do, I know). I didn’t find any tracks or markings of any sort, of course, I wasn’t really expecting to…but I noticed that there was a scattering of some of the oddest mushrooms that I had ever seen. They looked to be straight out of a storybook illustration. They were toadstool-shaped, a few inches in height…the caps were round and smooth, bright red, and the edges and undersides of the caps and the stems were a bright bright yellow. I then noticed that they were growing in a nearly perfect circle on the side of the bank. I could just imagine a tiny person sitting in the center of that ring of toadstools and scampering off down the riverbank.

Funny thing is, despite having been stomped on by a tiny foot and laughed at, I never got any hostile or negative vibes. It seemed more like a “Get off my lawn, you weren’t invited here!” kind of thing, lol. I kept wanting to blow kisses and apologize to whatever was on that riverbank before I was, and I’ve never been one to blow kisses! Hahahaha.

Oh, and if anyone was curious at all, I do have a (kind of recent) photo of the bank where this all took place:

Lovely, isn't it? I can see why any sort of being would enjoy sitting there. There has been more that's happened since then, but that may have to wait till later~

Thats a very interesting story! When i had an experience right after it a cardinal landed down and stared at me for a good couple of minutes too and now i see them all the time around my backyard which i never saw them before. There also is a bunch of bluejays ill randomly see watching me which is strange. I think its kinda like what happend to you.

I think that is a faery ring and your lucky to have found that, you should probably go back to that spot and try and be friends with whatever is there.

Don't worry, I've always been sure to be very wary around fairy rings and let them be. You never know what might be responsible for them, and I've never been in the habit of sacrificing well-being for luck ;] Besides, it seems that whatever was there probably isn't too keen on suddenly befirending someone who just recently disturbed their riverbank.

@Cob: Hm, that is interesting! I wonder if fairies have a special connection with birds, and cardinals in particular?

@Anouk: Thank you! ^-^ It is a very beautiful spot, and there are several like that all along the river. I may have to dig up a few more pictures to show…
