Okay, so i was reading a book online the other day which had originally been either japanese or chinese, and had been translated to english by someone. One character/person/thing that appeared in the last chapter was a fairy who the translator said the literal translation of was "Mist Fairy" or "Mist Man". But I think that it has another more exact name for it. But the problem is, I've never heard of this type of fey before. Basically, it looks like a man wearing a black cloak and also has to do with black hounds/dogs and mist or fog. I think it might be from english, scotish, or irish origin. Does anyone know what it is? Please tell me, I'm very curious. Thanks.

Sounds like something we have in Guisborough. He's known here as the black monk and is known to take his black dog on walks round the old priory ruins near the north gate at new years. He's supposedly a ghost of one of the monks who lived there. I used to see him when I was a kid, about 3, and once after that when I was 13. Though the time when I was 13 was when I was living in the south of England so it made me think maybe that man wasn't tied to Guisborough after all. The name Misty Man might explain why he seemed to appear by the boiler cupboards in the houses though.
I don't know if he is this misty man but your post reminded me instantly of the one I saw when I was little, all I could tell you of him is that he has a strong, if not scary, presence and he seems to like the boiler cupboards when appearing in houses.

Umm…Someone told me it was the bogey man. But I don't think that's right. O.o

Why not have a look into some of the English and Scottish mythology about the black dogs and mist then? there are a lot of interesting myths and legends about them but not as many for the black cloaked man, that I have been able to find anyway. Though I have since found out that a few other church ruins in the Yorkshire area have similar hauntings of black cloaked people.
