From what I know the legend of the tall human looking elves (not really a legendLaugh) came from the Norse, heres the wikipedia page on elves http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E…..#Old_Norse. JRR Tolkien sometimes said that the ideas just came to him, when he was working on the stories, like a voice telling him what he should wright. So maybe he had some helpWink.
